This post from Resurgance.com was a great reflection for me as we approached Thanksgiving and the normal attitudes of “I just can’t wait to EAT turkey!” I have to admit that I was thinking about how much food I was going to eat and how good it was going to taste. This has been a struggle for me as the years have passed. I was thankful for this post to refocus myself and get read for the holidays.

I know for me, when the holidays come, so do the parties, baking, candy, cookies, cake, etc. I feel like it starts with Halloween and gets multiplied in our family because between September 30th and March 3rd our family has 6 birthdays, 5 holidays, and 1 wedding anniversary. Each of these comes with their own party, food, candy, and other goodies. Throw in the Super Bowl and now you’ve got some serious eating going on. It’s no wonder I seem to pack on the lbs whenever the temperature drops.

Now there is nothing wrong with parties and food. On the contrary, they bring family and friends together. There is joyful laughter and singing. You see people that you might only see a few times a year. And the food is amazing. That used to be one of the things that I looked forward to the most.

This Resurgance post got me thinking though, not just about gluttony, but about idols and about how anything that we use to “seek satisfaction and fulfillment” can be dangerous to our hearts. Paul’s words to the Colossians echo in my mind, “All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.” [1Cor 10:23] Meaning simply, eat, but not so that it tears you or others down. Feast, but don’t let it get in the way of worship.

I’m changing the way that I view food. It will benefit (edify) me in may ways.

Spiritually, with my focus off satisfaction in food, I can seek satisfaction where it’s appropriate; in God. Reading my bible and praying replace snacking and boredom eating. I become better suited to lead and teach my family when I’m more in tune with God.

Physically I will be healthier. All types of physical benefits come with not seeking fulfillment in food.

I honor my bride. It’s a withdrawal for her to see me make poor food choices.

I honor my kids. I set a good example and ensure that I’m healthy enough to be around for a while.

Today I was frustrated. Frustrated that my Bride had a different agenda in mind for my morning that I did. Frustrated that expectations were put on me that I didn’t necessarily know about or agree to.

I was frustrated.

Then I realized, as I talked it out with God on my way to the office, that maybe my frustration was not with other people or agendas or expectation that were put on me. Maybe I brought all that on by not communicating well with my Bride. Maybe I need to be presenting realistic expectations for other to be able to count on. Expectations of when and where I will be. How long a task will take. What time I’m going to get up in the morning and what type of things I’m going to get done that day.
All these things seemed to be at the heart of my frustration in what I thought was someone else’s issue. In truth, it’s my issue.

So. What next? I have to start presenting realistic expectation for the people in my life. This will be difficult at first, I am a very ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ kind of guy when it comes to me. That’s selfish. I have more that me to take care of. I’m going to need to be deliberate in what I do and how I plan.

It all comes back to self-control and discipline. Two things that I am continually working on.

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. – Proverbs 25:28

A city without walls is vulnerable and open to attack, like my frustration this morning which tried to lead me into anger. I want to avoid that at all costs. Becoming more purposeful in what do and showing self-control will also set a good example for my kids whom I desperately want to teach excellence to.

Time to start rebuilding the walls…

we had a really good time this weekend though. the hotel room was really nice and Caleb and Emmry loved the pool. you could swim from inside to outside. outside was cold. Caleb and I did it a couple times.

my talk went really well. i feel that God gave me the right words for the occasion. hopefully someone got something from it and seeds were planted. i feel so blessed to still be able to use football as a platform to reach out to people.

Mister sunshine looked into Caleb’s mouth while Miss Nikki counted Caleb’s teeth. 10 on the bottom and 10 on the top! Just right.
Next, Caleb got his teeth cleaned by the spinny brush. Then he got to rinse and spit into the drain. After that Mister Thirsty sucked out Caleb’s spit while he got his strawberry flouride treatment. Strawberry was very important.
When we were all done, Caleb got to pick out a prize. He picked a big bouncy ball.
Overall it was very good. Caleb said he liked it.
Oh yeah, my teeth were fine.

At the end, we were walking up the back of a walkout lot when I started to slip. I tried shifting my feet, but nothing worked.
Down I go, to the hands and 1 knee, right in the mud. Did I mention that it was only 11am?
Luckily I had brought another pair of pants (that I should have worn out In the first place).

Today I wore different pants that I could get dirty and didn’t fall once. Go figure!

I spend my tuesday afternoon assisting the offensive line coach at Parkway South high school down the street from my house. I am having the best time with it.
Yesterday, I was working with our right tackle on pass pro. He used his hands well, and made a good block but he was catching. I told him I wanted him to use his hands as weapons and explode them on the defensive ends chest. I coached him up, he did what I asked, and he BLEW UP the d-end! It was AWESOME!

I love coaching.

The game started off well. I brought in a couple runs on an in-the-park homer. I slid into home and burned up my arm. It looks pretty good right now. I still have marks on my knees from sliding last year.
They scored several in the next inning and then we pulled it in close.
We played some awesome defense in the last inning to keep it tied up, and had a great time!

i was sitting around with Caleb the other day playing dominoes when i asked him a question.

“Caleb, what do you want to be when you grow up?”

“a Daddy!”

“oh yeah, what kind of Daddy do you want to be?”

“like you!”

that is so awesome, and scary. that means that i have to be a good daddy; not that i wasn’t planning on it anyway. i love this about Caleb though. he also says that he wants to be a “big daddy”.

that’s some huge responsibility being a daddy. i’m setting an example and trying to balance that with discipline. i pray that God will bless me with wisdom to teach Caleb and that he will gain understanding through me (Proverbs 4:1). i love the little man. he is so much fun right now. i can’t wait to take him fishing and go camping, ride bikes, play catch, and all those fun activities.

Lord, please give me wisdom and patience to be the kind of father your children deserve. Help me to discipline with love and teach righteousness. Guide my actions so I am a good example for my children. Help me to be an excellent husband so that my son will know how to treat a woman and my daughter will understand how she deserves to be treated.

Amen
